I came across this while searching for more information for my research paper on the correlation between video games and violence. So far, most of what I have found are studies that have no conclusive results and other trustworthy sites that go in depth about how most studies are biased when blaming video games for crime. From what I've seen so far, don't expect to get anywhere blaming games.

Oy nutta! Everybody who says this article condemns violent games needs to actually read the whole thing and not just the title. I am using this as a source for an essay pointing out that games do not cause violence. This reminds me of another argument - that over gun rights. Paraphrasing a statement on that subject, "Games don't kill people; People kill people." And Drak is exactly right - I make that same point in my essay. In the Columbine shooting, many people think that the kids shot up the shool because of video games. This is not true - many well-reasoned hypotheses state that they shot up the school because of a lack of violent games - the games were being used as an outlet for anger and destructive tendencies that were then funneled into shooting up the school. And by the way GTA is not 3rd person. It is second. You might want to get YOUR facts straight before criticizing somebody else's. Besides, she admitted that was a mistake. As a general rule, don't believe anybody if they can't even spell their argument correctly. Same goes for Nicholas. And dan - good argument, though it could use proper capitalization ;) The reason most killings show similarity to video games is that video games are built to be realistic - within reason of course.

I must admit, when I first became aware of shoot-em up games I had in mind games where a player might shoot spaceships out of the sky. Somehow I missed the initial release of the Grand Theft Auto series, becoming aware of the game only as Grand Theft Auto3 was to be released.

wow somebody needs to learn what the term "Shoot em up" means as a genre, because saying that Space Invaders and Ikaruga are in the same genre as a SANDBOX ADVENTURE/3rd person shooter game like GTA, is hilariously ill-informed. Even then, the likes of 'Quake' or 'Call of Duty' aren't "shoot em ups" (also called SHMUPS) but are "First person Shooters" different genres fools... Actually research Video games before you start to criticize them

I spend a long time playing shooters, I haven't felt any urge whatsoever to attack someone. I think that anyone who claims a video game causes violence are just being idiotic. I am doing a study as to whether games influence people to commit violent acts and so far I have found that 99% of the people i have spoken to and studied do not feel any urge for violence from playing these games. If someone is going to murder someone then they will do that regardless of whether they play a video game or not. In most cases that crime is committed in a similar way to a video game, the perpetrator has a troubled background and are usually below the age to be playing the game in the first place. One case that proved this was the Jamie Bulger murder where the kids murdered Jamie after watching childs play 3. It later came out that they had been abused byt their parents (and they should never have been watching that film as they were not old enough). In most cases it is down to how they have been brought up.

and the comment made by the student that says "some people play squash after work, i squash people" that is most likely a joke.

steven, they do have age ratings. parents just seem to ignore them and then blame game developers when their children go and do something stupid.

Violent video games are good. Because they let some kids vent anger in a game instead of taking it out on real life people. I myself have played some of the "shoot-up" games. But did I go rob a bank afterwards? No. I say as long as you tell kids that it's ok to do the things they see in the game, ONLY in the game. Then they is no real problem with it. Plus it's just all zero and numbers making up the game anyway. It's not like you're killing real people when you do it in the game. So just explain to your kids/teenagers it's ok to play the game and have fun with it. But nevered to do any of that stuff in real life or on real life people.

If Nicholas is a teenager he would do better to come in from school and read a good book that kept his interest and improved his grammar and punctuation.
This aside, I've read part of the resarch by Cutner and Olsen and found it flawed in too many areas to detail fully here. Sufice to say that their claim of being impartial researchers is refuted by the fact that they have an only child, a teen, who has been addicted to video games since he was five. If they found against video games instead of for them, how would that leave their credibility as parents? They had anyway decided years before that video games were ok when their son started picking off the weakest furry animals. No different to picking off the pawns in chess they said and no parent had objected to their kids playing chess. As for their research subjects, they ranged from pre-teen to teen to college kids. How wise, I wonder if they've noticed that in UK we have a serious problem with kids killing each other and the killers are not at college, they are more often dropouts who rove in gangs. But people - and legislators - tend to believe 'Experts', scary stuff...
