I think blogging is a good way for teachers and students to use as a tool to have a disscussion or a debate about various concepts. However, I don't think that blogging is a valid way to evaluate students' because some studetns face certain disadvantages that disallow them from activities such as blogging. Moreover, blogging is a useful technique for students who have trouble building up the courage to speak infront of their classmates. Through this technique teachers can post questions for discussions on their blogs and the students can go on and reply to the blogs by posting their opinions.

I taught a fully online master's level course this summer in which i kept a blog to chronicle my online course design and teaching reflections and in which i had the students keep blogs as metacognitive journaling and descriptive feedback learning activities. Here is the rubric i used to assess the student's blog postings http://etap687.edublogs.org/2008/06/02/reflections-blog-post-grading-rubric/

Link to student blogs are in the blog roll of this blog so you can see the students' course blogs.
